Newcastle United are considered to be a ‘big club’ in England, and yet, their last trophy of any kind came in 1955 in the FA Cup. This season, the Magpies are already out of the FA Cup, but they had a chance tonight to advance to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup and they used it and deserved it against the Foxes: Newcastle – Leicester 2-0.Sensational. 😍HOWAY THE LADS! 💪 pic.twitter.com/134eNV76HH— Newcastle United FC (@NUFC) January 10, 2023 The Magpies were absolutely dominant in every department tonight (22 total shots, 55% ball possession) and apart from the two goals scored, they had at least 5 good chances to increase the final score. It was evident from the first minute that Eddie Howe’s boys had the desire and hunger needed to advance to the quarter finals. In fact, they played a similar match like in the FA Cup days ago against Sheffield Wednesday, but this time, they scored enough goals to win.Newcastle United do a lap of honour at St James’ Park to soak in that semi-final feeling ⚪️⚫️ pic.twitter.com/CEPhsDNlKY— Football Daily (@footballdaily) January 10, 2023 Newcastle also had to fight against the tradition in the League cup, as they lost their last seven league cup quarter-final ties – the one last being a 1-0 defeat at Brentford in 2020. Their only win in nine League Cup last eight ties in their history came in a 1-0 home win vs Notts County in Dec 1975. But, they are also unbeaten in their last 12 home games in all competitions, and they continued that streak tonight.Sean Longstaff continued to miss rare chances he has, and this was a really good one, from 5 meters in the first minute of the game. Then Dan Burn had a chance from even shorter yardage but failed to meet the ball even thou he is almost two meters. And Bruno Guimaraes had three good shots from 20 meters in the first half, and and they all ended near the post or in the hands of Leicester keeper.Just as the second half started, Joelington rattled the post as the Magpies continued their dominance. There was another chance from Longstaff, then from Almiron…and then the home town boy Dan Burn, who plays an emergency left back for months used a bad defensive move by Leicester players, came in to the penalty area from the left and placed the ball with his right foot to the bottom left corner for the lead. St. James Park erupted and 12 minutes later it was all over after Joelington used one of his many chances during the match.
