Cash-strapped Kayole fall to Vihiga in mid-week clash

Despite being the home team, Kayole Starlets still struggled to host Kenya Women Premier League (WPL) champions Vihiga Queen at Nairobi’s Camp Toyoyo grounds with coach Joshua Sakwa admitting that they were not sure of honouring the fixture barely three hours to kickoff. At 11 am, however, action got underway and the final result came as no surprise to anyone that has followed the league as the indefatigable Queens bagged yet another victory in a 0-3 outcome. It’s FULL TIME here at the Camp Toyoyo Stadium, Nairobi..@KayoleEst 0:3 @VihigaqueensfcWayodi Mercie5 ⚽Maurine Achieng Ater ⚽Own Goal ⚽Who’s NEXT??😅😅|| Photo Courtesy ||#VihigaQueens#LegacyMakers pic.twitter.com/w8raDFrc9x— Vihiga Queens FC (@Vihigaqueensfc) January 11, 2023 Vihiga Queens opened the scoring in the 27th minute as skipper Mercie Wayodi led by example, breaking the deadlock. She was not yet done as, with two minutes to the break, she provided the assist for Vihiga’s second goal as Maurine Ater got her name to the scoresheet.Kayole Starlets drove the final nail in their coffin in the 77th minute with an own goal that handed Vihiga a sweet victory away from home .”It was a good match but playing in the dilapidated turf at Camp Toyoyo made it that much tougher for tye team. We are, however, happy with the win. Kenya has potential to become African football powerhouse- Gelson FernandesI know the expectation was for a better performance but playing away is always tricky. Additionally our finishing is not where I would want it to be. We missed chances that we shouldn’t be missing so I have to work on my strikers. They are relatively new in the team so it still is a work in progress. I, however, challenge them to go the extra mile and be sharp on the pitch,” Vihiga Queens coach Boniface Nyamunyamu told Mozzart Sport. Meanwhile, Kayole Starlets head coach Sakwa says the club is in deep financial troubles and is not able to comfortably host or travel away for matches. “Playing away in Nairobi is easier for us. When we host, we have to cater for hiring the grounds, the ambulance and security which is a big expense. Travelling out of Nairobi, but for Thika, is also costly,” the tactician explained adding that the team risks relegation if they issue two more walkovers.
