Hearts and minds: Newcastle send Sudanese boy Kuol to Scotland for the rest of the season

Scottish Premiership club Hearts has taken Newcastle’s young attacker Garang Kuol on loan until the end of the season. The 18-year-old, who featured at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, came through the academy at Central Coast Mariners before making his senior debut in December 2021.Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe and director of football Dan Ashworth were keen for Kuol to stay in the UK if possible in January to get experience of the physicality and pace in the country.##NAJAVA_MECA_6938368##The Australia international had other options in Scotland and in the EFL, but there are three other Australian players at the Edinburgh club. World Cup teammates Cameron Devlin, Nathaniel Atkinson and Kye Rowles all play for Hearts. This young footballer already has a resume many more experienced stars would admire. And it all feels even more surreal if you consider that he was born in Egypt to desperate parents fleeing South Sudan. Now he’s a Premier League player with World Cup experience. He’s here…🇦🇺 pic.twitter.com/MtdXV1gVry— Heart of Midlothian FC (@JamTarts) January 12, 2023 After being introduced to Newcastle fans last week, Garang has decided that Hearts is the best place to be for next stage of his development. Hearts manager Robbie Neilson said the youngster would be a valuable asset to them as they try to keep the highly respectable third place in the Scottish Premiership.”It’s fantastic news that Garang has committed himself to Hearts for the next six months. It’s no secret that we were extremely interested in him, and he came up for a look around last week. He was impressed with what he saw and what we’re trying to do here, which is pleasing. We’re getting a player who is by no means the finished article, but there is a lot of talent there. We’re really looking forward to working with him.”Hearts will host sixth-placed St Mirren on Friday night in the league.
