Controversy, passion and sucker-punches: Union push city rivals Hertha down toward the 2. Bundesliga

Union Berlin scored in either half to make it five wins in a row over their city rivals, Hertha BSC. As the red and whites returned to second place in the Bundesliga standings, the abysmal Hertha continue to slip towards relegation.Hertha gave it a good go at their iconic Olympiastadion. Still, besides a few early chances and a desperate penalty appeal in the second half, they had no way of ensuring the bragging right in the German capital. The visitors took the lead through defender Danilho Doekhi. He scored with an unstoppable header to give Union the lead just before the break. Doekhi scored all four of his Bundesliga goals this season with his head – you could say he used his head well this season! The opening goal came against the run of play, as the blue-whites looked a bit more dangerous in the opening exchanges. But they were far to wasteful once again – and are likely to pay the price come the end of the season.🇩🇪🧨 Union fans during the Berlin derby today! pic.twitter.com/0RPffG3tKD— EuroFoot (@eurofootcom) January 28, 2023 In the last campaign, Berlin’s weathier club remained in the top tier thanks to a two-legged win over second division’s HSV in the seasonal relegation play-off. This year, their form could see them slip out of the top flight without a chance of a play-off reprieve.Hertha were punished midway through the second half when one of their attacks ended with a penalty shout as Union’s Rani Khedira seemingly fouled an opponent in the box. The hosts didn’t get a spot kick, however, and Sheraldo Becker escaped everyone, and squared the ball timely for Paul Seguin to tuck it away nicely into the empty net.The hosts protested and wanted the goal disallowed, they screamed for a penalty, but referee Felix Brich reviewed the VAR footage and still said no.Seguin’s goal was only his second-ever in the Bundesliga, and both were against the city rivals. That’s how you endear yourself to the supporters. The away fans celebrated wildly and out-sand their hosts.
