Gor Mahia boss explains Benson Omala’s terrific scoring form

It is safe to say that Gor Mahia’s Benson Omala is amongst the most on-form strikers in the world presently. Omala grabbed his second hat-trick of the season as K’Ogalo hammered league strugglers Wazito FC 4-0 in the FKFPL at Kasarani Stadium on Valentine’s Day.

In 14 games so far, the former Kisumu Day High School player has scored 15 goals, including two hat-tricks.According to Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry, Omala’s good form can be ascribed to two things; “less touches” and quality balls from his teammates. “Benson (Omala) has improved a lot this season. It’s almost about doing less, if you look at Benson from the past couple of years, he was always looking to get touches on the ball. That’s the nature of a young player, wanting to touch the ball. But the nature of a top number nine is less touches, but when you get your touches, you’re in the box, or one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper,” the former Uganda Cranes tactician explained, “He has probably touched the ball less compared to last season, but where he has touched the ball are in those dangerous areas,” the former Uganda Cranes coach said. If the service is not quality then you’re going to score, it doesn’t matter if you have Erling Haaland in front.”Omala tops the scoring chart with five goals more than his closest challenger for the golden boot award Elvis Rupia of Kenya Police FC.
