Surely the most surprising transfer this January has been Joao Cancelo’s loan move to Bayern Munich. The City defender was a regular at Pep Guardiola but things changed for worse after the World Cup and the two men soon had a bust up at the training ground (which they denied) and he went on to play for the Bavarians. There is also another ‘jewel’ in the City squad who started every match, but after the episode in Qatar is not the same. Luckily for City fans, Phil Foden is not in the same situation as Joao Cancelo. Pep Guardiola: “If you pretend to say that I’ve lost trust with Phil [Foden], forget about it. Phil is our diamond.” [via @BeanymanSports]— City Xtra (@City_Xtra) February 24, 2023 The England international played just a third of City’s matches since the World Cup, but not because Guardiola had other ideas like with Cancelo, but because he had injury issues, and he eventually had to ask the coach to rest him a bit. And that’s why he was out of the squad, as the Spaniard was quick to explain to the journalists, who already thought that something else was up. “He made an incredible effort, playing with pain, and arrived at a moment when he said, ‘Pep, I cannot any more’, so he had to rest. We gave him a week or two off, and after that Riyad Mahrez was in his best time of the season and Jack Grealish made a step forward. If you are saying that I don’t trust Phil, forget about it. Phil is our diamond. He needs to be himself. I saw other players better than him at times after the World Cup” explained Guardiola. Pep’s not happy, Haaland’s not happy, but happiness is overestimated anywayIt was the former Barcelona coach who actually predicted what will happen to his young star.“I say to him, ‘You are so young, next season is a new one. If you drop a little bit this season, it’s an absolutely normal process’. How you handle it is the question. He is training like an animal, no doubt about that, and he will be back, like he was at Nottingham, where he was brilliant, perfect. He just has to continue” revealed Pep his conversation with Foden.𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿. @PhilFoden.
