FIFA referee Israel Mpaima’s competence is being questioned, again. The Nakuru-based whistle-blower is no stranger to controversy if the past is anything to go by.In 2016, he was amongst five match officials who were suspended by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for poor officiating.Mpaima was dismissed for 90 days over his decision to award Tusker FC an 89th minute penalty against Ulinzi Stars, which saw the Brewers win 2-1. The call was found to be wrong following a review. On Wednesday, following their barren draw against Sofapaka SC at Kasarani Stadium, Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry outrightly called out Mpaima as unfit to officiate at the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) level.”I think the center referee shouldn’t just referee a K’Ogalo game but any FKFPL game until he goes and gets some training,” a visibly upset McKinstry told the press after the game against Sofapaka. Tusker grab late win over AFC to move closer to leaders Gor MahiaAccording to the former Uganda Cranes coach, Mpaima is ignorant of the laws of the game, and that’s inexcusable at the top flight standard.”I think he was a disgrace. I don’t think he should be an FKFPL referee. Referees can make honest mistakes, but not knowing the rules is a real worry,” the Irishman added.

The draw leaves K’Ogalo gasping for air at the top of the table, with Tusker FC, who edged out AFC Leopards 0-1 at Nyayo Stadium, breathing heavy on their shoulders. The record Kenyan champions keep a four-point gap between them and second placed Tisker, who have played a game less.
