A 4-0 loss is not something players can forget easily, no matter who is in the team. And a 4-0 loss from a team called Real Madrid is certainly an event which will be in the mind of players for some time, especially if those players are from Barcelona. After an embarrassment at Nou Camp in the Spanish Cup, the Catalans and their coach Xavi had to find the mental strength to overcome the loss and continue their path to the La Liga title. But they failed. It seems good enough for the title, but the display was worrying. Barca’s coach made only two changes after a 4-0 loss, as Ansu Fati replaced Franck Kessie, while Eric Garcia came in for Marcos Alonso, but it didn’t change much. For the second game in a row, the Catalans failed to score a single goal. Before that, their last game without at least one goal was on October 2022, in the Champions League against Bayern Munich (0-3). Barca did have 10 shots in total, but only two were on target. After a few half-chances from both sides, the crowd at Camp Nou didn’t see much. Raphinha could have scored in the 36th minute after a pass from Fati, but Girona’s keeper Gazzaniga was on the spot. And the worst was yet to come in the second half. The Catalans had control (as expected), but the best chance of the match was missed by the visiting team. In the 55th minute, Girona caught Barca’s defence on the wrong foot, and Castellanos, along with Tsygankov went in front of Ter Stegen. Castellanos could have passed the ball to his teammate, but he decided to shoot instead. And it was one of the worst misses of the entire season. Embarrassing. Xavi used all his changes, and brought in Torres, Kessie and Alba, but it didn’t work. The Catalans didn’t even have a shot on target in the second half until injury time.
