‘From the streets of Nigeria to the world’s history books’

When Napoli officially became champions after a last week’s draw in Udine against Udinese, one of the goalscorers, Victor Osimhen received a lot of congratulations. His friends, family and teammates rushed to acknowledge his great achievement in Napoli’s title run (23 goals in 28 Serie A appearances so far), but the Nigerian forward must have been very proud when his childhood hero publically congratulated him. When Victor Osimhen posted a photo capturing him at the on-field celebrations of the title and wrote ‘Greatness’ former Chelsea player and African icon Didier Drogba tweeted: ‘It would be my dream to be African Footballer of the Year’“Indeed Capo. From the streets of Nigeria to the world’s history books. Congratulations my brother to you and your club”. These words must have brought a real joy to Osimhen, who often cited Drogba as his childhood hero. Indeed Capo @victorosimhen9 from the streets of Nigeria to the World’s History books .Congratulations my Brother to you and your Club @en_sscnapoli https://t.co/KhJTO7AP15— Didier Drogba (@didierdrogba) May 8, 2023 “I have always supported Drogba and I have huge love and admiration for him. I remember when he scored the equaliser in the 2012 Champions League Final, an amazing header, and the way I celebrated was as though I had scored the goal. My friends knew I was obsessed with Drogba. When I scored 10 goals and won the Golden Boot at the Under-17 World Cup in 2015, one of the Nigeria staff showed me a tweet from Drogba. It said ‘Congratulations Victor. I wish you all the best for the future.’ I was shocked. I never believed someone like Didier Drogba would tweet those words to a young aspiring striker. It gave me a whole new motivation to succeed. Trust me, he has been so helpful. One morning last year I woke up and checked my Instagram, and found messages to me from him, complimenting me, but saying I still had a long way to go. He’s a hero in his country, he’s played to the highest level, won a lot and made African youngsters dream. He’s a busy man but whenever he sees my messages on Instagram he replies immediately. It’s a great feeling” revealed Osimhen recently.‘I will not sell Victor Osimhen this summer – no way!’The Nigerian will be a big name in June’s transfer window, but Napoli president already said that there is ‘no way’ that he will let him leave the club in the upcoming transfer window. The official Napoli radio station is reporting that President Aurelio De Laurentiis is negotiating a new contract with Victor Osimhen’s agents. He spent 75 million euros to Lille for the Nigerian back in 2020 and his contract runs until 2025 so if he decides to change his mind, Osimhen will be sold for over 100 million euros. But so far, he has been true to his word, so the Nigerian might well continue in Naples for 2024 season. ##NAJAVA_MECA_7244857##
