Swiss enforcer is no longer Arsenal’s captain – and he could soon leave the club

When questioned about the possibility of Granit Xhaka leaving Arsenal and moving back to Germany, Bayer Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes acknowledged that the Bundesliga team is preparing for a busy period ahead of the new season. Could Xhaka return to Europe after more than five years in the Premier League? Well, Rolfes confirmed the Aspirin Makers are thinking big. The 30-year-old midfield dynamo has been a fan favourite at Borussia Monchengladbach in the past and is believed to be keen on returning to Bundesliga football. He has apparently informed his teammates that he too planned to leave Arsenal. “We are looking at the market to see what possibilities there are to improve our team. But I don’t want to comment on individual players. There will be big rebuild in our team. We’re trying to bring in new ideas. We want to improve the squad. Our ambitions won’t be lower next season.”##NAJAVA_MECA_7244757##Arsenal signed Xhaka from Monchengladbach in 2016. The Swiss midfielder has since appeared in over 220 Premier League matches for the club. Arsenal seems to be actively looking for a long-term replacement. The left-hand channel position that Xhaka has made his own over the course of his seven years at the Emirates Stadium is where West Ham captain Declan Rice, Mikel Arteta’s top target, would slot in. If the West Ham arrives to the Emirates, Xhaka would probably have to leave to search regular first-team football.🚨 Arsenal may include Granit Xhaka in deal to sign Moussa Diaby🗣️ Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is interested in signing Xhaka, and Arsenal could use the player as leverage in their pursuit of winger Diaby, according to The Sun.🗣️ Diaby has 14 goals and 11 assists this… pic.twitter.com/URkBCn4yL4— Arsenal Informer (@ars_informer) May 9, 2023 Arsenal’s boss Arteta and Leverkusen’s tactician Xabi Alonso are good friends, so the negotiations should go smoothly in case Xhaka indeed returns to German football.
