Lacazette not enough for Europe: Lyon lose in Clermont

Luck has abandoned Lyon. After so many games in which they either won or avoided defeat in injury time, something like this was bound to happen, especially after Laurent Blan’s team didn’t learn any lessons after those games. Last week, Alexander Lacazette scored four goals (a winning penalty in the 100th minute included) in a stunning 5-4 win over Montpellier after losing 1-4 during the game, but today their luck run out. Former Arsenal forward scored the opening goal but failed to prevent his team’s loss after missing the penalty in the 96th minute: Clermont – Lyon 2-1.𝗨𝗣𝗦𝗘𝗧 😱Diaw stops Lacazette’s penalty at 95′ to win the match! pic.twitter.com/Bt4Oo9jWhE— Ligue 1 English (@Ligue1_ENG) May 14, 2023 With the likes of Monaco, Nice and Reims in the last three games and with three points away from Lille, who have a game in hand, it will be tough for Laurent Blan to get his team into Europe. And they have only themselves to blame after they scored the leading goal and then allowed a mediocre Clermont team to turn the game around completely and defeat once great club.Lacazette qui rate le but de l’égalisation face à Clermont ! 😳#CF63OL pic.twitter.com/dEFpGRnDFH— QuotidienSport (@Quotidien_Sport) May 14, 2023 The visitors started the game better, and soon they were up by one goal. After one good chance, Lyon captain Alexandre Lacazette used the second one and brought advantage to his team in the 22nd minute. But after only three minutes, a turnaround happened. Clermont got the penalty after a rare attack when Lukeba fouled Khaoui in the corner of the box, and Kyei levelled the score. As if this goal was a sudden boost for the home team, they started to press Lyon and had one good chance, while Sarr had a good shot on the other side of the field.GOL DO CLERMONT!!! Zeffane crossed at the far post towards Kyei, who was better in the air than Diomande and placed a winning header in the bottom left corner. Clermont got defensive after that, and Lyon started to press, Dembele came in as well, but nothing was working until they got the penalty in the 96th minute. Lacazette aimed but ultimately shot poorly, and keeper Diaw saved it for the pandemonium in the stands and the end of Lyon’s hope of Europe next season.LIGUE 1 – MATCHDAY 35Friday Lens – Reims 2-1 (1-1)/Frankowski 40(p), Fofana 55 – Balogun 23 (p)/Saturday Strasbourg – Nice 2-0 (1-0)/Diallo 1, 59/PSG – Ajaccio 5-0 (2-0)/Ruiz 22, Hakimi 33, Mbappe 47, 54, Youssouf 73 (og) )Sunday Clermont – Olympique Lyon 2-1 (1-1)/Kyei 25(p), 65 – Lacazette 22/16.00: (1.94) Montpellier (3.60) Lorient (4.50)16.00: (2.30) Brest (3.35) Auxerre (3.50)16.00: (1.29) Rennes (6.50) Troyes (10.5)16.00: (2.24) Toulouse (3.50) Nantes (3.45)18.05: (2.80) Monaco (3.45) Lille (2.50)21.45: (1.24) Olympique Marseille (7.75) Angers (16.0)***odds are subject to change***
