AFCON 2027: President Ruto throws weight behind EAC Pamoja Bid

The President of the Republic of Kenya Hon William Ruto has declared his government’s full support for the East Africa Community Pamoja bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027. Speaking at State House this afternoon, Ruto reiterated Kenya’s commitment to ensuring the bid is successful. “I have spoken to my counterparts in Uganda and Tanzania and we are confident this is a good opportunity for East Africa. We will work hard to ensure we are ready to host AFCON in 2027,” Ruto, who was flanked by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa and CEO Barry Otieno amongst other dignitaries, said. We know we have competitors but we are confident that we will be successful and East Africa will host the AFCON for the first time in 2027. I am very confident of a good ending to this bid,” he added. Ruto is confident that hosting AFCON 2027 will open exciting opportunities for the East Africa region. “This sector is a giant wellspring of opportunities. We will ensure we place Kenya on its rightful position as a sporting superpower. It will stimulate local sports, promote tourism, create employment and enhance our national sporting and athletic brand,” he said, “We want East Africa to be the epicenter of regional and continental football resurgence and bidding to host the AFCON is a statement of what we want to achieve,” he added.Other nations that have expressed interest in hosting the prestigious competition in 2027 include Algeria, Egypt and Botswana. The final bids will be sent by Wednesday 17th May.
