German legend buys a club in Ghana

The legendary German national team player and Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthaus became a co-owner of the Accra Lions football club from Ghana. The former Bayern and Inter player saw his new club as a great opportunity to create talented players and distribute them to Europe. Matthaus invested the money together with business partners, former agent Oliver Koenig, and former Ghanaian international Frank Acheampong. Matthaus wants to take part in developing young talents from Ghana and giving them a chance to play and shine in Europe.”Of course it’s a business model. Ghana has always had huge potential in terms of talent, and you can see that in the national team” said the German to Bild.📸 Images of Lothar Matthäus being unveiled with Ibrahim Tanko and Oliver König before being introduced to players of Accra Lions 🇬🇭🦁 Photo credit: Christian Thompson pic.twitter.com/ntxQHdrqWs— Bortey 🇬🇭 (@joelbortey) May 23, 2023 Oliver Koenig is said to have already developed extensive contacts in West Africa and took over the presidency of the Accra Lions back in January this year. His old acquaintance and former Dortmund and Freiburg player (and later scout of Cologne) Ibrahim Tanko is currently sports director in the club. Acheampong is still involved in football, playing for China’s Shenzhen and wearing the national team jersey, but he is clearly looking to the future when it comes to working in football.”I met Koenig and Acheampong through a friend a year ago and they excited me about this project so much, that we decided to become partners. Ghana is a football country and what I saw while training with the children is that they love football. I saw a lot players with good qualities and a passion for football. This is the key to making better football in Ghana in the future” Matthaus added.##NAJAVA_MECA_7277210##
