Sheffield Wednesday beat their Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley with a last-gasp added-time winner to earn promotion to the EFL Championship. It was one of those games at Wembley Stadium where you wait for the penalty shoot-out with no goals to report. But Josh Windass scored a diving header in the last seconds to round off a remarkable season for the Owls.Windass’ goal is something that clearly runs in the family. His father Dean did something similar in the Championship play-off final in 2008. Playing for Hull City, he scored the only goal of the game to beat Bristol City and send the Tigers up into the Premier League for the first time in the club’s history. On this day in 2008… 🗓️ WINDAAAAAAAAASS!!!@DWindass10 #HCAFC pic.twitter.com/bI9juaJqrX— The Second Tier (@secondtierpod) May 24, 2023 In 2023, however, son Josh was the hero. Barnsley were forced to play for most of the game with ten men after Adam Phillips was sent off for a bad tackle just after the half-time break. The Tykes fought bravely, but their succumbed to Wednesday’s attacks just as penalties looked certain. Barnsley goalkeeper Harry Isted made numerous fantastic saves to keep the game goalless, but not even he could prevent the late winner.2008: Dean Windass scores a Playoff Final winner to send Hull City up.🐯 2023: Josh Windass scores a Playoff Final winner to send Sheffield Wednesday up.🦉 Father-son playoff heroes 15 years apart.👏 pic.twitter.com/wOormsitAb— Ben Jacobs (@JacobsBen) May 29, 2023 Sheffield Wednesday and their manager Darren Moore had quite a remarkable season. For most of the campaign, they looked certain to secure one of the top two places in the EFL League One, but a slump in form at the end of the season saw them finish third – leaving them to navigate their way through the play-offs. They were dead and buried after they lost the semi-final first leg 4-0 away at Peterborough. But they staged a remarkable comeback at Hillsborough and earned their place at Wembley. Around 44,000 blue-and-white fans made their way from Sheffield to London to see their team battle for promotion, and young Windass made sure they were not leaving disappointed.Josh Windass ! The player rises higher than the others and meets the ball in the wonderful middle made by Lee Gregory and sends the ball into the middle of the goal with a close range header.
