His father was a great coach and an even bigger loser. Today, he becomes Eintracht’s future winner

Have you ever heard the word Neverkusen? It’s the joke nickname the British press coined to describe Bayern Leverkusen in their painful 2001/2002 season. In it, they lost the Bundesliga title on the final day of the campaign, lost the German Cup final and lost the UEFA Champions League final to that Zinedine Zidane goal. Their coach that season was the mad genius Klaus Toppmoller, who never won anything in his career, is remembered as an innovator and a charismatic character. The 42-year-old, who had a brief stint playing for the same club 20 years ago, will succeed Oliver Glasner, who famously won the UEFA Europa League last season. The Toppmoller family is deeply connected with Frankfurt. Ten years before old Klaus became synonymous with Neverkusen, he was in charge of Eintracht.
