Kakamega Homeboyz eye Tusker scalp in Mozzart Bet Cup final after another triumph over Gor Mahia

Kakamega Homeboyz head coach Patrick Odhiambo was on Thursday reflective of the tough start he endured as the club’s new head coach, to the massive improvement he had seen the team gain under his watch, his message coming soon after a memorable 3-2 comeback win over Gor Mahia at the Kasarani Stadium.“First of all is to thank the Homeboyz fanbase and everyone who has rode with me through the journey,” Odhiambo, who started off his role at Abana Beingo with three consecutive losses in March said. “The patience they’ve shown me is the reason I love the club and strive to show them that it’s possible to win with this group of players.”Following a rather lack-luster 3-1 defeat to Sofapaka on 16 March, the club has only lost four games in 15 games – across three months – to find themselves in a ‘respectable seventh place’ and in the finals of the Mozzart Bet Cup.“We are just aiming to win all our matches,” Odhiambo said when asked about the secret sauce to beating big sides this season when least expected. “You know every win acts as a motivation and you have to keep that winning streak going.”Among the notable results Odhiambo, a former Biashara United and Prisons FC head coach has engineered are; a 1-0 win over Gor Mahia in the Mozzart Bet Cup Round of 16, a 2-1 Mozzart Bet Cup semifinals victory over their rivals AFC Leopards and another win against K’Ogalo on Wednesday.A rollercoaster of emotions unfolds after Gor’s loss to Kakamega Homeboyz“Winning means everything to them and you could see it,” Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry said of the display by Kakamega Homeboyz in the league’s penultimate fixture. “They came here with nothing to lose and the freshness they have helped them cope with the level of stress in this game.”Asked about the motivation behind winning games that wouldn’t do so much on their final position in the league standings, Odhiambo said; “We want to be in the best mood possible as we head to the big final against Tusker.“We have been on a long, tough journey and finishing it in the best way will be best for us. We are dreaming and yearn to represent Kenya in the continental championships – CAF Confederation Cup.”Kakamega Homeboyz turn to Patrick Odhiambo’s expertise after parting ways with John BarazaHomeboyz close out their turn-around season at home against Bidco United on Sunday, 25 June from 1500 EAT before playing Tusker in the cup final on 1 July.
