Yaya Toure – a master tactician in the making

Yaya Toure is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in Manchester City’s recent history. Winning numerous accolades at the Etihad and leading the Cityzens to several pieces of silverware rightfully put him in the category. And during his playing years he had the privilege to work under some great managerial names but the one strategist he worked under twice is arguably the best manager ever – Pep Guardiola.Being a manager himself now, Toure is trying to build up his name in coaching waters and he is taking his time. So far the African has been honing his craft in Ukraine, Russia, England and will soon take an assistant role in the Belgian top tier. While working in England, Toure was part of Tottenham’s youth system and footage has emerged of the Ivorian working with Spurs U16 squad. Coaches’ Voice Academy released the video of a training session and it is safe to say Toure is walking down the right path.##NAJAVA_MECA_7345291##He explains that captaining his club and country gave him the inkling that he wanted to be a coach, but that it is a big transition for former players, especially when managing a social-media-focused generation of new talent. In the practice session, youth academy players are led through drills that teach them to adopt the appropriate body position to receive the ball and play forwards, get the ball out of their feet quickly to the spare man, and find space to create chances.Toure’s coaching style is shown to be demanding and high-octane but also encouraging. Overall, the drills are designed to reinforce a possession-based philosophy and the ability to be creative under high pressure. The session starts with an uncontested technical passing practice, with players working around mannequins and developing their passing and receiving abilities. Then, there is some 8v4 possession game played in the centre circle of a pitch. To close the session off, the 40-year-old leads the youngsters through a five-a-side match compressed into a small pitch with full-sized goals, forcing players to get creative to make space for shooting.New coaching course 🚨 Before joining Standard Liège as assistant coach, @YayaToure led his Tottenham Under-16 team through a session designed to reinforce the principles that underpin maintaining possession and creating under high pressure… 🇨🇮⚪️#THFC— CV Academy (@CVAcademy) June 27, 2023 ‘Be patient, be calm, and understand it’s a learning development for them. You have to give them the sense that you appreciate working with them and they have to feel that from you. ‘ Toure said with focusing on a personal approach to man-management. ‘In that sense, the more they trust you, the more they give you, the more they work hard.’The former Barcelona and Manchester City star has been head coach of Spurs’ U16s side since last summer but will soon be joining Belgian outfit Standard Liege as assistant manager.
