SPORTS KENYA: Kenya will be ready for AFCON 2027

Sports Kenya Director General Pius Metto is confident the country will be ready to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.Metto said they have already embarked on plans to upgrade existing facilities and believes this time around ‘Kenya will not be stripped of hosting opportunities due to lack of infrastructure’.“It is common knowledge that we have lost two opportunities to host continental events because we did not have the facilities for them. This will not happen again,” he said.He revealed they have engaged consultants from the University of Nairobi who are looking at the existing facilities alongside what is required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after which they will begin the upgrading work.“The consultants are looking at existing facilities and by the end of this month we will have an idea of what needs to be done. After that the work will begin and we should be able to finish on time,” said Metto.Ziyech fails the medicals and rejects less money – no deal with Al Nassr##NAJAVA_MECA_7354589##Apart from Nyayo and Kasarani stadia, Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret has also been identified to host the tournament. The country also has to have nine training venues ahead of the event. A lot of work will be needed at Keino Stadium but even here Metto believes they will do everything on time.“We were in Eldoret two weeks ago and the contractor has been encouraged to expedite the work. We are confident everything this facility will also be ready. We are lucky that President William Ruto is keen on ensuring that we do everything to be ready to host the tournament. This gives us the motivation to give it everything.” Metto said. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have put in a bid to host the 2027 tournament. Kenya lost the opportunity to host the 1996 tournament and the 2018 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) due to lack of facilities.
