After Lucien Favre was sacked following a 5–1 loss against VfB Stuttgart in December 2020, Borussia Dortmund decided to name young Edin Terzić as an interim manager. He was an assistant coach with the Swiss tactician, and with ten years in Dortmund already, he was a logical choice. He oversaw 20 wins and eight draws and won the DFB Pokal in his interim season. But, BVB wanted a proper coach and Marco Rose was introduced. The Millionaires parted ways with Rose after only one season, and he is coming with Leipzig today to play against his former club, who decided to give Terzić a proper chance in 2022. But this is the match which could be the start of his downfall. Swap in the making – outcast for an average wingerAfter 13 weeks of Bundesliga, Borussia is already out of the title race, just nobody said it out loud. BVB is 10 points below Bayer and Bayern, and with both teams playing atomic football at the moment, there is no way Dortmund will catch them. Terzić also allowed to be beaten by Stuttgart twice, the last time a few days ago in the Cup, so a chance for any sort of trophy is out of the question. The only bright thing so far is the knockout stage of the Champions League, which was secured in the Group of Death with Milan, PSG and Newcastle. It’s almost half of the season in Germany, and Stuttgart is still the revelation of the season and is firmly in the 3rd position. In case something unusual happens, like the sale of Serhou Guirassy (exit clause only 15 million euros), it is logical to assume that the club will remain in the top four places, which leaves Dortmund and Leipzig fighting for only one remaining place. Rose on Werner’s alleged departure: “Who said that?”Dortmund is not playing well; their summer recruitments (apart from Fullkrug) are not making any visible difference, and so far, only the club’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke is clearly supporting Terzić. But that could all change if the Millionaires fall behind in the Champions League race. And a potential loss at Westfalen today could be the turning point. Luckily for the host, Leipzig is really bad in away matches this season. Since October, they have recorded only two away wins in all competitions (Darmstadt and Red Star in the Champions League), while Dortmund lost at home only to Bayern Munich. Edin Terzić must find a way to ‘wake up’ his team and start winning; otherwise, even Watzke won’t have patience.
