PSG start the year 2024 with a 12th Trophee des Champions trophy

The year 2024 started perfectly for current League 1 champions. PSG played it’s first competitive match in the new calendar year and it resulted in a trophy, as they defeated Cup winners Toulouse 2-0 in a Trophee des Champions game. Moved from the beginning of the season to the start of January, the game was in the hands of the Parisians from the first minute. Coach Luis Enrique got it’s first trophy at the helm of PSG and he did it without much fuss. Toulouse won the French Cup last season, surprising stronger teams along the way, they managed a 1-1 draw against PSG in the league and they even won against Liverpool in the Europa League (3-2), but today they were toothless. The game was on ‘neutral ground’, which was in fact Parc des Princes stadium, and Toulouse are terrible there. Former League 2 team are winless in their last 15 games against PSG in Paris, losing 14 of those matches and tonight they made it 15 out of 16. They are generally in bad form and have only two league wins, so it’s no wonder that they didn’t made any surprise result tonight. Vithina made a great crossfield pass to Dembele, who volleyed the ball back across the face of goal and Lee applied a calm finish. Quick and easy goal. The Parisians had the advantage in all aspects of the game from that moment on, and Barcola and Lee should have scored some more goals, but that didn’t happen until the last minute of the first half. Mbappe collected the ball 25 yards from goal and dribbled away from three defenders into the box before firying into the far corner for the second goal. The visitors had one great chance while the score was still 1-0, but Dallinga’s shot was just tipped by Donnarumma. The second half was quite a boring affair since Toulouse didn’t have the strength to threaten PSG, while the Parisans didn’t bother much and failed to score the third goal. Luis Enrique brought in Asensio and Kolo Muani, but the score remained the same. Toulouse’s best (and only) chance in the second part of the game was a shot from Sierro, but Marquinhos was there to make a super block and prevented a goal.
