CAF increases AFCON prize money amid broadcast backlash

The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) has announced a 40% increase in the Prize Money for the Winner of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (“AFCON”) Côte d’Ivoire 2023.The Winner of the competition will receive approximately Ksh 1,102,500,000 (USD 7,000,000). The Runner-up of the extravaganza will now get USD 4,000,000.Each of the two semi-finalists will receive USD 2,500,000 and each of the four quarter-finalists, USD 1 300 000.Ulinzi Stars goalkeeper Stephen Ochieng set for long injury layoff“CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions. We have increased the Prize Money of the AFCON Winner to USD 7 000 000 which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money. I am confident that a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations,” CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe said.The 34th edition of the biggest sports event on African soil will take place from 13 January to 11 February 2024 in Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Bouake, San Pedro, and Korhogo.The opening game will feature hosts Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau on Saturday 13 January 2024 at Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe, in Abidjan.##NAJAVA_MECA_7775653##The match will kick off at 20h00 local time (GMT).Meanwhile, Multichoice Africa has announced that DSTV and SuperSport Channel on GOtv will not broadcast the AFCON.In a statement, the South African Broadcasting Company said the reason is because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.It was, however, stated that the games would be broadcasted through their partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels.Cameroonian Superman to play two games in 24 hoursThe statement reads “SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th to February 11th, 2024, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels. Multichoice Africa remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivalled access to entertainment and football games available on DStv and GOtv platforms including, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League and many more of football’s most prestigious competitions.”The announcement has been met with a lot of backlash for the continental federation.
