WPL: Ondeko looking to pull Bunyore out of relegation zone

Bunyore Starlets’ head coach Timothy Ondeko has his work cut out in the second leg of the Women Premier League (WPL) as he looks to guide his charges to a successful campaign that would see the side escape the imminent chop.Tenth on the log on nine points from 10 matches, Bunyore hosts struggling Gaspo Women who find themselves not only in unfamiliar territory in 11th place (with the 12th placed side Trans Nzoia Falcons already relegated) but also in trouble following sexual harassment claims against team manager Edward Githua. Bungoma on the mend as WPL’s second leg gets underwayOndeko says his side is ready for the clash slated for Sunday 21 January at Mumboha Stadium where the hosts will look to complete a double over the Kiamvbui-based 2022/23 season runners-up.In their first leg meeting in October 2023, Bunyore picked a 1-0 win and coach Ondeko is keen to replicate that performance and have his side on a perfect start to the second part of the season.“The mid-season cum festive break was a blessing as we had time to regroup and work on our shortcomings. We had a good start to the season but lost track midway, finding ourselves in danger of relegation. We are looking to get back to the form we were in at the start of the season,” the tactician offered.Bunyore go to battle without the services of the side’s best scorer last season, Irene Magdalene who has ditched the side for Tanzania’s Yanga Princesses. What’s more three players are to miss this weekend’s clash as they are out injured. That’s a wrap on the 1⃣ Leg 🥳#FKFWPL pic.twitter.com/f3SC9Xozz6— FKF Women Premier League (@FKF_WPL) January 15, 2024 “Irene’s departure is a blow, so is missing three players. This affects our depth but we will work with the available talent. The three injured are back in training but will not be available for the Gaspo match. We expect them to be fit by the next fixture,” Ondeko explained. The tactician is banking on the experience the relatively new squad picked in the first leg, having signed 20 ahead of the 2023/24 season. “We have picked valuable lessons in the first leg and now are aware of how everyone plays. The challenges we experienced in the first leg have also been resolved and we are in a better place. It will take hard work to save our situation but everyone is ready,” he added.Maximum points for Ondeko’s charges has the potential to catapult the side to the top six on 12 points, depending on the results of the other weekend match. ##NAJAVA_MECA_7812066###FKFWPL returns with a bang! ⚽🔥 Second leg, let’s go! pic.twitter.com/23DMbFOooq— FKF Women Premier League (@FKF_WPL) January 18, 2024
