Milan miss penalties but Bologna don’t! Two goals each at San Siro to distance Rossoneri from the title race

AC Milan were punished for two penalty misses after Bologna’s Riccardo Orsolini netted his own spot-kick to deny the Rossoneri a fourth consecutive league victory. The in-form hosts carved out the first meaningful chance in the 19th minute when Rafael Leão created the space to sting the palms of Bologna goalkeeper, Łukasz Skorupski. Despite making a positive start, Milan conceded the first goal in a home league game for just the third time this season. Joshua Zirkzee, who has been linked with a move to the Rossoneri, guided his effort through the legs of Mike Maignan after the visitors kept the ball alive following a couple of blocked efforts. As the first half moved toward its conclusion, Bologna were left frustrated after Lewis Ferguson was ruled to have used a high foot against Simon Kjaer in the box – a decision that saw Thiago Motta sent off for his protests. The Bologna boss would have felt justice was served when Skorupski comfortably gathered Olivier Giroud’s tame spot-kick. Unfortunately for the Rossoblù, the goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Ruben Loftus-Cheek from prodding home from close range.Ten-man Juventus split points with pesky EmpoliAfter conceding an equaliser on the stroke of halftime, the visitors had a golden chance to restore their lead within three minutes of the restart. Zirkzee neatly controlled a lofted cross and evaded a couple of challenges to create the opening, but the forward could only blaze harmlessly over the bar. It was then the turn of the hosts to go close, as Tijjani Reijnders crashed an effort against the frame of the goal. With just under 20 minutes remaining, Milan was awarded their second penalty of the evening. Like Giroud in the first half, Théo Hernandez was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, striking his spot-kick against the post before his rebound was ruled out because no other player had touched the ball. Hernandez would have been relieved to see Loftus-Cheek produce a thumping header from Alessandro Florenzi’s lofted cross to score his second goal of the contest. However, just as Milan thought they had sealed all three points, Filippo Terracciano gifted Bologna the chance to level from the spot. Under immense pressure, Orsolini drove the ball under Maignan to salvage a precious point.
