AC Milan came from behind to beat Frosinone 3-2 in a Serie A thriller, extending their unbeaten run to eight league matches in the process. The hosts had conceded first in each of their last three home league games before tonight, and Milan had scored in every away league game this season. Thus, it was no surprise to see Olivier Giroud give the Rossoneri the lead in the 17th minute, as he powerfully headed in his 11th Serie A goal of the season at the back post from Rafael Leão’s teasing cross.
That early setback seemed to spur Frosinone on, as Demba Seck forced Mike Maignan to palm his long-range strike over the bar, before they were awarded a penalty midway through the first half. Leão was the culprit having handled the ball inside the area, giving Matías Soulé a chance to equalise. The Juventus loanee curled the spot-kick calmly into the top corner to reach double figures for the season – the first-ever Frosinone player to do that in Serie A. That put a spanner in the works for Stefano Pioli’s men, who pushed to retake the lead before halftime as Giroud’s lovely delivery just missed Christian Pulisic’s diving head, before Leão’s deflected cross was just scrambled away by Stefano Turati.
Despite their strong finish in the first half, Milan started the second slowly, and paid the ultimate price when Frosinone captain Luca Mazzitelli turned the game around for the hosts, coolly slotting past Maignan to put them in front. However, the Rossoneri struck back just a few minutes later in this topsy-turvy affair, as Matteo Gabbia headed home his maiden Serie A goal after Giroud’s delicate header found him at the back post.
The incredible back-and-forth continued, and conjured up yet another twist with just seven minutes left on the clock, as substitute Luka Jović struck into the bottom corner after the ball fell kindly to him in the box, gifting Milan all three points. Pioli’s men have lost just one of their last nine away league matches, and with just five points separating them from table-topping Inter, perhaps their title tilt isn’t over just yet. As for Frosinone, that is now six defeats in eight for them in the league, and they remain winless against the Rossoneri from six attempts.
