It was the 10th of December 2023 when Everton won their last home game in the Premier League. They’ve beaten Chelsea 2-0 and after that played eight games and never won. Their only triumph since December in all competition was the FA Cup win over Crystal Palace. And the Toffies played the managerless Eagles again tonight, but this time they were not so lucky: 1-1. The London club parted ways with the 76-year-old Roy Hodgson just hours before this game, and assistant managers Ray Lewington and Paddy McCarthy took over, while the newly appointed Oliver Glasner watched from the stands. Their star players Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze were missing, and everything was set for a decisive Everton win over the relegation rival, but Ghana’s forward didn’t allow it. Jordan Ayew nearly won the game with a powerful volley in the 66th minute, but his fellow African Amadou Onana equalized in the 84th minute. Scoring goals continues to be the biggest issue for Dyche, with just 26 in 24 matches, exacerbated by Calvert-Lewin’s current lean spell of 18 games. Needless to say, the Toffies striker continued his goalless streak, even though he had two good chances. On the other hand, Crystal Palace players tried hard to impress the new boss, and he had a chance to see his new team live for the first time. A very boring first half brought only two good chances, both by the visitors. First, it was Edouard who shot straight at Everton keeper Pickford, and then, in the 38th minute, former Manchester United player Ashely Young cleared the ball off the line after Mateta’s shot. Calvert-Lewin had the only chance for the Toffies in the 23rd minute, but a totally out-of-form striker shot wide of the near post, missing the goal entirely. Everton made their first shot on target in the 64th minute, when they failed to score twice in a matter of seconds. Tarkowski’s powerful shot was saved by Johnstone, and the ball reached Doucoure, but his shot was not good and it was saved. Two minutes later, Ghana forward Jordan Ayew got the ball from Mateta and stroked a powerful volley to send the away fans into delirium. Sean Dyche made some attacking changes, risking the second goal. Gardner had the best chance in the 83rd minute, but his volley was saved by Johnston. But Onana was there after the following corner and brought a much-needed equalizer.
