Bayern’s new director: ‘Next coach should be German or English’

When he finished his modest playing career, Max Eberl decided to begin his executive career at the club he was playing at the time – Borussia Monchengladbach. But as of today, he is back where he started his career, in Munich. Former Bayern youth and senior player (1979 to 1994) became the sports director and held the introductory press conference along with other supervisory Board members. His first day at work will be March 1st and he signed a contract with the German record champions until June 30, 2027. It is interesting that the Bavarians already have a sports director – Christoph Freund, so the relationship between the two men is certainly something to monitor in the future. Eberl is clearly the boss, especially after the supervisory Board made a change in their board of directors and from July 1, Eberl will be in there, along with chairman, and Director of Finance & Sales.💬 Dreesen on Max Eberl: “He’s reliable and trustworthy. Max played for Bayern for almost 15 years, he knows the club’s DNA. With Max, we’re gaining someone who brings a great deal of expertise to the board. Management also only works as a team. Even though he spent a long time… pic.twitter.com/w37V4g9xSC— FC Bayern Munich (@FCBayernEN) February 27, 2024 Eberl is a highly regarded executives, who did wanders in Monchengladbach with a limited budged, before making a number of mistakes and finally quitted his job after 13 years. Borussia made it to the Champions League in the 2019/20 season, but things fell apart afterwards. First coach Marco Rose decided to quit and move to Borussia Dortmund (he lasted there only one season) and Eberl didn’t sack him in January, but kept him even thou the team underperformed and lost the season. Then he promoted Adi Hütter from Frankfurt, but he only lasted one season. He also had some great transfers while in Borussia, but let some good players leave for free, especially Marcus Thuram, who is now thriving in Inter Milan.’I’m tired of football and I’m tired of you’: Borussia director cracks under pressureAfter emotional breakdown and resignation in 2022, he came back rather quickly to football and took the role of sports director at Leipzig, where his coach was again Marco Rose. He famously said at the time “The day will come when Bayern will have to vacate the throne”. He was right, but that day will come this season, when he is in Bayern. Leipzig boss Oliver Mintzlaff was pursuing Eberl for 18 months, but surprisingly sacked him after less than 10 months. A club statement explained that the reason was “a lack of commitment” to club and city, widely interpreted as a failure on Eberl’s part to distance himself from persistent rumors linking him with Bayern Munich. And Leipzig was right, he eventually did sign for the Bavarians and came back to this boyhood club. The power of rumours: Eberl sacked by LeipzigAt the press conference, Eberl stated that first contacts with the Bavarians started in November 2023 and continued throughout December when he realized that they were serious about him. His first task will be to find a new coach and he agreed with the decision to let go of Thomas Tuchel.“It is the right decision. Jan-Christian, Christoph and Mr. Hainer made the decision. They felt like this was the right impulse. I wasn’t involved, not at all. The club was always capable of action. It feels right to me. New coach should be German or English. We just want to find a coach who suits Bayern Munich. About the demands, about the ideas. We need stars, but we also need young players. And he should be keen on that. And he should speak a language that we all speak: so it should be German or English. When it comes to French, things get a little thinner for me. That is also a criterion, but not an exclusion criteria” he explained.🚨Max #Eberl wanted to bring Xabi #Alonso to Borussia Mönchengladbach as a coach three years ago, when he was the coach of Real Sociedad B. Eberl explains now:„He turned me down at the time because he said it was still too early. However, that doesn’t allow any conclusions for… pic.twitter.com/yITvcmVDWn— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) February 27, 2024 Eberl also talked about the long-term future of the club.“We want to get the best out of it this season. We are in the unfamiliar role of hunter. I’m here to collect titles. All of my colleagues have won championships, but I haven’t won any yet. I want to get at least one. Our philosophy is to bring the best possible players to FC Bayern who can achieve the greatest possible success – that is, titles. Bavaria has always done this with great foresight. This is outstanding. Of course we will also make sure we find stars. Whether these can be realized remains to be seen. But we also want to support the development of players like Tel” said Bayern’s new sports director.##NAJAVA_MECA_7910265##
