Rory McIlroy’s drop at 2024 Players Championship had social media, playing partners asking questions

The talk of the golf world Thursday during the opening round of the 2024 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium Course was a conversation surrounding a drop.

Rory McIlroy hit his tee shot on the par-4 seventh, his 16th hole of the day, into the water left. He and playing partners Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland proceeded to have a detailed discussion regarding the drop in a conversation that lasted more than 5 minutes.

And cameras caught every bit of it.

Eventually, McIlroy ended up dropping closer to where Hovland and Spieth thought his ball dropped, and he eventually made double bogey. He still had 10 birdies and shot 65 in the opening round. However, the discussion focused heavily on his drop.
