FKF Premier League side Kenya Police FC have singled out winning the Mozzart Cup as their first major top flight title since inception, says Patrick Matasi. The law enforcers earned promotion to the top-tier league three years ago after a successful outing in the 2020–2021 second-tier league.Despite a slow start to life in their maiden season, Police picked themselves up the following year and are currently one of the most formidable teams in the league.Coach Salim Babu’s team currently sits second in the 18-team league with 48 points, trailing table-toppers Gor Mahia by six points. With the league taking a break to pave the way for domestic cup action, Police will be back in action on Saturday when they lock horns with Sofapaka FC in the Mozzart Bet Cup quarterfinals fixture at the Dandora Stadium. In the previous edition of the competition, police were eliminated in the last eight stages by fellow law enforcers, the Ulinzi Stars, who handed them a 2-0 defeat. A win for the police will advance their chances towards the finals of this year’s tournament in their second attempt at the competition. The 2014 Gotv shield champions will be hoping to make good use of the opportunity to enhance their winning chances in what has been a substandard season. Ahead of the clash on Saturday at Dandora Stadium, police custodian Patrick Matasi has backed the club to win the second edition of the tournament. “We have a perfect opportunity to win our first championship, which is our main goal of the year. We understand it won’t be an easy task considering we are up against stronger opponents, but we equally have a solid squad, which I am backing to get the job done at the tail end of the season,” he stated. The Harambee Stars first-choice keeper last won the domestic cup, then named the Gotv shield cup with the AFC Leopards in 2013.The experienced shotstopper further states that winning this year’s tournament will be a perfect opportunity to grace continental football, which he feels will be a great achievement for the club.”Winning the Mozzart Bet Cup will be a perfect achievement for us since it will grant us a chance to play some continental football, so by large it will be our greatest achievement of the year,” added the former Tusker goalkeeper.
