More than 10 percent of the 2024 U.S. Open field were amateurs. Only three of them are going to be around for the weekend.
There were 16 amateurs who teed it up at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina for the 1,000th USGA championship, including those making their first major championship start and others who were playing in the U.S. Open yet again. Also among those was the top-ranked amateur in the world and the low amateur from the 2024 Masters.
After Friday’s second round, the cut was made to the top 60 and ties, and more than half of the ams are packing their bags and heading home. Meanwhile, there are a few who will fight for the title of low amateur.
