After winning the 2022/2023 FKF Premier League, Gor Mahia, as anyone would expect, went into the transfer market in search of players who would help them bolster their squad in readiness for CAF assignment and defending the league title. One of the players that they went for was a player from their last game’s opponent, Nairobi City Stars defender Kennedy Onyango.Onyango’s signing was received with mixed reactions from the team’s supporters but he has since proven to be a worthy signing, in fact, one of the best signings of that transfer window.Homeboyz coach criticizes his attackers, urges selflessnessHe has been the most constant figure in the heart of Gor Mahia’s defense and has played alongside almost all of the other central defenders in the name of Joshua Onyango, Sylvester Owino and Emery Bayisenge. In the process, Gor Mahia has emerged as the meanest defense in the league so far, conceeding just 13 goals as the strode their way into their 21st league title.Onyango is elated to have won the league in his debut season.“Definitely I must feel good. It is a nice feeling. Gor Mahia is a big team that competes for the title and so to help them win is good. There are 18 teams who are equally competing for the title and so emerging the best is not an easy task.” said Onyango##NAJAVA_MECA_8161515##“Mark you, I was from Nairobi City Stars who were not in the contention matrix then and to now be a league champion, I am happy and proud of myself.” he added. On his personal performance this season, Onyango said he is pleased with it but aims for even more as complacency and comfortability is not an option for the former Chemelil Sugar defender. He, in fact had an extra motivation to perform better and silence his critics“Since I started playing in the league, I have always been a regular starter whenever I’ve been and amidst the challenges, I always brave the fight like a lion. Some people criticized my move which prompted me to work harder and God rewarded my efforts,” he opens up.Coach Jonathan McKinstry who signed Onyango and fielded him most of the times will be leaving for Gambia as the national team’s head coach. Onyango says they will miss him but will have to adjust quickly.“Gor Mahia is a big team ad the expectations are high, for us, we have no option but to perform better with whoever is chosen as the head coach,” he admits.Going forward, Onyango hopes to capture the eyes of national team’s coach Engin Firat and represent his country, Kenya.
