Born in Varese, Italy, on October 15, 2003, Matteo has roots in both Italy and Kenya.He spent his recent years as a dynamic right-back for Lugano U20 until the end of last season. Where were you born and what’s your background?Matteo Lape: I’m Matteo Lape, born in Varese, Italy, on October 15, 2003. My father hails from Kenya, specifically Malindi, while my mother is Italian, from Varese. I also have a brother on my father’s side named Lucky.Mozzart Sport: Have you had the chance to visit Kenya? How do you feel about your roots there?Matteo Lape: Absolutely, I’ve been fortunate to visit Kenya numerous times, creating unforgettable memories with my family. It’s somewhere I’ve connected with relatives and cherished the cultural richness. Despite football commitments limiting my visits lately, I’m eager to return, hopefully soon. Though initially about fun and camaraderie, I harbored dreams of playing professionally from a young age. Over the years, I progressed through various clubs until joining FC Lugano at 14.That’s where I navigated the youth ranks, breaking into the U21 squad before signing my first professional contract at 18. Alongside my U21 exploits, I’ve had glimpses of the first team, including appearances in high-stakes matches like the Swiss Super League and Conference League qualifiers.Mozzart Sport: Describe your style of play and versatility on the field.Matteo Lape: I consider myself a rapid player with sharp directional changes, particularly effective in one-on-one situations. Defensively, I keep it simple, while offensively, I enjoy delivering crosses and making penetrating runs. While primarily a right-back due to my right-footedness, I’ve also been deployed as a left-back this season. As a dual citizen with strong ties to both Italy and Kenya, I see no distinction between the two. If given the chance, I’d be honored to represent Kenya. Ultimately, the decision rests with the federation, but I’m ready to answer the call if it comes.Mozzart Sport: Who are some Kenyan players you admire?Matteo Lape: I’m familiar with several Kenyan players, but two who stand out are Wanyama and Mariga for their achievements in European football.
