The picks are in and U.S. captain Stacy Lewis will lead a familiar team next month in Virginia with nine returning players from last year’s squad. For her three picks, Lewis selected two experienced players in Lexi Thompson and Jennifer Kupcho, along with a 30-year-old rookie in Sarah Schmelzel.
World No. 1 Nelly Korda and No. 2 Lilia Vu, fresh off contending at last week’s AIG Women’s British Open, headline the team of 12 vying to win for the first time since 2017. The 2024 Solheim Cup will be held Sept. 13-15 in Gainesville, Virginia, at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, host of three previous Presidents Cups.
Angel Yin, who tied for second earlier this month in Portland and tied for 10th at the Old Course, just missed out on a fourth Solheim Cup appearance. The 25-year-old broke an ankle earlier this year during the offseason and got off to a slow start.
For Thompson, this will likely be her final Solheim Cup appearance. The 29-year-old American stalwart announced earlier this year that 2024 would be her last full-time season on the LPGA. Thompson and Alison Lee, who is making her first Solheim Cup appearance in nearly a decade, are the only U.S. players who have been on a winning Solheim team.
Last year’s contest in Spain ended in a tie, with Europe retaining the Cup.
