“The victory has a hundred fathers, but defeat is an orphan” the old saying goes. But when that victory finally happens, it‘s quite fair to name those fathers. And in today‘s comfortable (but unsecure at times) Manchester United‘s 3-0 win over Southampton there are three ‘fathers‘: Andre Onana, Matthijs De Ligt and Marcus Rashford. The Cameroonian keeper was the one who changed the course of the game in the 33rd minute when he saved a penalty from Cameron Archer, Matthijs De Ligt was the one who punished the home team for their misses after only two minutes with the first goal and Marcus Rashford was the one who mentally ‘killed‘ Southampton with the second goal just four minutes before time. This was easily the best United game so far, easily because there were not so good ones since the beginning of the season and even this one started shaky. By the time Onana saved the penalty, the wining less Southampton was attacking seriously and created chances, and it looked like it was just a matter of time before United‘s defense would concede a goal. Tyler Dibling was ‘destroying‘ Dalot who committed a penalty. But when Onana saved Archer‘s shot, everything changed and just eight minutes after that, Manchester had two goals advantage and recorded another win over Southampton. The Red Devils haven‘t lost at St. Mary‘s since 2003 and the record goes on. This win will come as a releif for coach Erik ten Hag, since he is about to start a series of seven games in the space of 22 days between the end of the September international break and the start of the October break. The people who made his life easier are the ones he promoted and believed in them: Matthijs De Ligt and Marcus Rashford. The Dutchman was terrible in the Netherlands team in the UEFA Nations League and was even benched bey Ronald Koeman, but Ten Hag gave him a starting place and he responded with a great header in the 35th minute, after a perfect cross by Fernandes. The other one was Rashford, who scored his first goal for United since March this season, and who is totally out of form and with no self-confidence, but the Dutch tactician believed in him and again inserted him into the first team. He replied with a fantastic goal and two more excellent chances during the game.As for Southampton, they will find a tough time to stay in the Premier League if they continue to be this naïve. They played against 10 men Newcastle in the season opener and still lost, and they had great chances and a penalty against United in this game, and yet they easily lost this one. In fact, if it wasn‘t for Aaron Ramsdale and his great saves, it would have been 6-0 easily. This way, the former Arsenal keeper allowed only three, as Garnacho scored in injury time to make the final score 3-0.
