CONFIRMED: Barry Otieno resigns as FKF CEO

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Chief Executive Officer Barry Otieno has stepped down from his position.According to sources, Otieno stepped down on Friday with reports suggesting that he is warming up for FKF’s top seat in the forth-coming FKF elections.“It is true he handed in his resignation last week but we do not know what his next step is,” a source who is familiar with the matter told Mozzart Sport. When contacted Otieno confirmed he had stepped down ‘due to work-related pressure’ but was cagey on whether he would contest in the forth-coming elections.“The position has been very demanding for me and so I have time off at this time. Personally, I have not thought about contesting though there are many demands on me to throw my weight in the ring. Nothing has been decided yet and so we shall see what happens,” he said when contacted.Otieno was conspicuously missing from an important FKF function over the weekend where top federation bosses were meeting branch officials from all the 48 counties.A total of 40 branch officials attended the meeting with FKF president Nick Mwendwa who is seeking to consolidate support as he aims at contesting for a controversial third term in the up-coming elections. This week, Mwendwa has scheduled two other meetings with club officials as he seeks support.Otieno was appointed CEO in 2019 after former holder of the office Robert Muthomi was forced to step down following controversy over the transfer of former Sofapaka striker John Avire to Egypt. He has been a key confidant of Mwendwa and his expected entry into the top FKF race increases the number of contestants for what is expected to be the most bruising contest.Hussein Mohammed, Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino, Tom Alila, Sam Nyamweya, Sammy Ocholla have already declared their interest in the top post. The elections will start at the branch level on November 9 and will be followed by the national elections on December 7.
