Onana saves Cameroon from an embarrassing defeat

Looking at the table in Group J, the match between Cameroon and Namibila was supposed to finish in lots of goals. After all, the Indomitable Lions have a star-packed team while the Brave Warriors are winless. But no. This game proved that without it‘s stars like Napoli man Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, in-form Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo and Brighton‘s Carlos Noom Quomah Baleba, Cameroon cannot score even against a winless Namibia. The Indomitable Lions have picked up 10 points from a possible 12 in the qualifiers to sit top of the Group J standings, two points above second-placed Zimbabwe, and didn‘t lose in this game either, but failed to open the five-point gap between them and Zimbabwe in order to secure a first place. In fact, they should have lost this game, but Manchester United Andre Onana kept them at bay with a pair of excellent saves: Namibia – Cameroon 0-0. Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season but he was spared from playing in these qualifiers, as well as Carlos Noom Quomah Baleba (on Brighton‘s request). Anguissa just became a father and stayed in Italy to be with his family, so the whole attack was on Vincent Aboubakar‘s shoulders, and he didn‘t show much. Without all the worries in the world, winless Namibia created better chances and deserved to win, but United‘s keeper Andre Onana was there to prevent an embarrassment.𝐅𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄: 🇳🇦 After suffering 4 consecutive losses in their opening matches, Namibia finally secured their first point in the AFCON 2025 Qualifiers Group J today with a 0-0 draw against Cameroon. It was Prins Menelik Tjiue who was involved in both those opportunities. In the first one, his excellent cross in the 14th minute would result in a certain goal, but there was nobody in the goal area just to touch the ball and put it in the net. Minutes later, he was fouled near the penalty area but instead of challenging Onana from close range, the Brave Warriors tried some practiced action which failed miserably. The host continued with their brave display and created two excellent opportunities between 18th and 25th minute. The first one came from Deon Hotto, who burst from the left into the penalty area and forced Onana into a acrobatic save and then, after another free-kick, Hotto nearly scored. Onana was helpless, but the ball whistled near the bottom right corner. Manchester United had to save his teammates once more before the end of the half, as he battered the ball away to a corner after a good shot from Peter Shalulile.Namibia head coach vows to stop Harambee Stars’ 2025 AFCON qualificationMaybe some thought that the Indomitable Lions will wake up in the second half, but no. Namibia continued where they left off and in the 57th minute Prins Menelik Tjiue managed to hit both the post (header) and the bar (shot) from close range in a space of seconds! It‘s quite unbelievable that he managed to miss such a chase twice, but the score remained the same. Former Tottenham and Monaco player Georges-Kévin N’Koudou had the best chance for Cameroon in the 65th minute, when he received a back pass from Yvan Neyou and then took a great shot, but Namibia‘s Maowa was there to prevent the lead. Patrick Soko had an opportunity to claim an undeserved win in the 85th minute, but shot straight at the keeper from 5 meters.AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS – QUALIFIERSWednesday Namibia – Cameroon 0-019.00: (3.40) Liberia (3.10) Togo (2.30)22.00: (5.20) Chad (3.45) Sierra Leone (1.75)***odds are subject to change***
