UEL: A 36-year old keeper and Kuluševski heroes in a Spurs draw

With only one win in the last five it the Premier League and with only 10 points from their five games in the Europa League, it‘s easy to conclude that Tottenham are in a result (and performance) crisis. In England, they are in 11th place, in Europe, they sit just outside the automatic qualification places. Coach Ange Postecoglou is currently unable to shake up his players and bring them to the last season‘s level, when they nearly finished fifth in the Premier League. Back in London, articles of his potential sacking appeared, fans are also angry and booed him after a 3-4 loss at home against Chelsea, and as win against Rangers was ideal to calm things down. After all, while being a Celtic coach, Postecoglou regulary beat Rangers. But tonight, instead of a much needed win, the Spurs are coming home happy that they didn‘t lose: Rangers – Tottenham 1-1.GOAL | Rangers 1-0 Tottenham | Hamza Igamane HAMZA IGAMANE OPENS THE SCORING FOR RANGERS !pic.twitter.com/EdLFaGxX6J— SPORTSXTRA (@RayKaiUpdates) December 12, 2024 When Spurs best player, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario got injured, many believed that this was defining moment for Tottenham. But the experienced, 36-years old Fraser Foster stepped in and saved his team tonight. Dejan Kuluševski scored the only goal for Tottenham, but if it wasn‘t for Foster‘s saves, the scored could have easily be 3-1 for Rangers. Ange Postecoglou made five changes from the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea as Archie Gray (18) started as center-back, with Radu Dragušin. Rodrigo Bentancur started in place of Pape Sarr while James Maddison also gets the nod in midfield with Dejan Kulusevski benched. Heung-Min Son has been moved up front with Dominic Solanke on the bench and replaced by Timo Werner.Kulusevski sent ball back into the net!Rangers 1-1 Tottenhampic.twitter.com/3TCdZUWFut— Goals Xtra (@GoalsXtra) December 12, 2024 Spurs have been bad in the first half, lacking control and poor in possession, while in attack they managed only one shot on target. On the other side the hosts had two excellent chances, but keeper Fraser Forster managed to save them somehow. First one happened after only 10 minutes when Cerny combined with Bajrami but his shot was saved by the Spurs keeper. The second one was in injury time, when Cerny took a shot but Forster parried it. The Spurs also failed to capitalize on Souttar‘s injury. Rangers‘ best defender this season limped off after only 30 minutes, but Tottenham was toothless upfront.Dejan Kulusevski has scored in back-to-back appearances within a single season for Spurs in all competitions for the very first time. 😲 pic.twitter.com/N5xDlnGM5M— Squawka (@Squawka) December 12, 2024 Since they failed to regroup after the break, the hosts punished them at the start of the second half. A Moroccan forward Igamane used a wonderful Tavernier‘s pass and finished into the bottom right corner for the lead and the eruption at the stands. Johnson made the first half-effort for the guests in the 54th minute but it was far away from a decent play and Rangers continued to press. Ange Postecoglou made three changes as Solanke, Sarr and Bergvall came on for Johnson, Bentancur and Bissouma. Bergvall took a shot over the bar just as he came in, Maddison‘s free kick whisled over the bar minutes later and Porro‘s shot was saved by the keeper, but those were not excellent chances for the visitors. And then in the 75th minute, Kulusevski equalized when the ball came to him from Solanke and Tottenham was right back into the game, but that was all the Spurs could do. It was Forster with an unreal save in injury time who saved the English club from another defeat.
