Potter debuts for West Ham with a defeat in the FA Cup

Graham Potter returned to coaching after a year and a half break following his dismissal from Chelsea. For a little over an hour, it seemed like his debut on the West Ham bench would be successful. However, Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers spoiled the celebration. With goals in the 71st and 76th minutes, they overturned the Hammers’ lead from the 9th minute, when Lucas Paquetá scored, and secured Aston Villa a 2-1 victory, earning a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️ | (#FACup) Amadou Onana (goal) vs West Hampic.twitter.com/zB3o9EnFF8— Belgian Players 🇧🇪 (@BelgianPlayers) January 10, 2025 GOAL: #AVL gets the lead with Morgan Rogers🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Aston Villa 2-1 West HamGraham potter bottled the lead. pic.twitter.com/NCKXeLATIg— SHAYEE (@tier_firstt) January 10, 2025 The former Brighton manager didn’t have much time to get to know his team, and injuries added to his problems ahead of the trip to Birmingham. West Ham arrived without their key player Jarrod Bowen, as well as Michail Antonio, Todibo, and Emerson. Additionally, after just 15 minutes, Niklas Füllkrug had to leave the game due to injury, and judging by the way he limped off and the grimace on his face, it’s uncertain when he’ll return to the pitch. The hosts were not at full strength either, but they stepped up in the second half and managed to achieve the desired result. Tyrone Mings flicked on a corner to Maatsen and Fabianski could only push his shot to Amadou Onana, who reacted quickest to poke home from close-range. West Ham were furious, claiming the corner should not have been awarded because Boubacar Kamara’s shot was not deflected. But Villa scented blood and went for the kill in the 76th minute. Ollie Watkins burst into the West Ham area and pulled his pass back to Rogers for a clinical strike into the bottom corner.
