Here is the interesting fact: back in the FA Cup final in 1974 when Newcastle and Liverpool last met, both clubs were equal in terms of support and numbers of trophies won (11 each). In the 51 years since, Liverpool have lifted 40 more trophies — and Newcastle have claimed only one – the Intertoto Cup which no real Toon supporter counts as a trophy, so for them it’s been no trophies in the last 70 years! Since the Saudi takeover in 2021, this is their second Carabao Cup final in four year, a fantastic achievement under coach Eddie Howe, considering their last final before this was back in 1999. And yet, they are facing the toughest possible opponent in the final – Liverpool. Our time.#wedontdoquiet pic.twitter.com/SOvEiXBGeE— Newcastle United (@NUFC) March 16, 2025 Even in that final in 1974 they lost to the Reds 3-0 and there is apsolutely no data which can support the Magpies and their hope today. Over the years, Liverpool proved time and time again that they ’own’ Newcastle. The club from the North East of England hasn’t defeated the Reds since 2015. They remain the only club (apart from Bournemouth) which Howe hasn’t defeated since becoming the coach in Newcastle. One of the most brutal statistics which can provide a clear Liverpool dominance is this: Liverpool won 11 Premier League matches in which they have trailed against Newcastle! So the Magpies can’t even expect a win when they score first against the Reds. In fact, that’s when they are most likely going to lose. The thriller we all new it was coming! Nunez does what he does the bestLiverpool also has Mohamed Salah. Not only is he in the form of his life during this particular season, but he likes the Magpies like no other team: He has 10 goals and eight assists in 17 appearances against Newcastle, including five and seven in eight games since Howe took charge in November 2021! And he will have an even easier task than in prior matches, as Lewis Hall, a dependebale left back who contained Salah pretty much in the first game of the season is out for the rest of the season. So, right back Tino Livramento will have to play out of position today. But that’s not the end. Anthony Gordon, a boyhood Liverpool fan is suspended and his seven goals and six assists across all competitions will be missed. On the other side, for the first time this season, Liverpool is facing an injury crisis, but really a tiny one – they are short of right back spot. Everybody else are in perfect health (just like they were whole season so far), but Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are out for today’s game. Surely, with so many stars in the team, this should be no problem for the Reds. Their players only have their fans to play for, and that’s not a small thing, if they realize that. The European football and a place in a history books are at the stake too, and have been bigger surprises in the football world in recent years, so why not? At least, the Magpies will win the singning battle at the packed Wembley, and even Liverpool based journalists agreed on that. The general sponsor Sela provided a scarf for every Newcastle fan today and the Wor Flag group will provide some interesting banner at the match, so everything is set for another fantastic fan experience from Newcastle fans, at least until the end of the game. ##NAJAVA_MECA_8784232##
