Four-finger Big Dan did it hard way and should be inspiration for all of us

On Friday, he got his first call-up for the England squad at the age of 32. On Sunday, he scored an opener in his side’s brilliant triumph against Liverpool for the EFL Cup trophy, the club’s first major trophy in 70 years.Dan Burn’s life story is as inspirational as it gets, with all the inevitable lows, failures and misfortunes a genuine man can face. But still prevail despite all of that.Dan Burn’s story…❌ Released by Academy aged 11🛒 Pushed trollies at Asda 🙏 Worked his way up the leagues✍️ Signed for Newcastle at 29 🤩 Champions League goal at 31🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England call-up at 32 🏆 POTM at Wembley🏆 Winner at Wembley#NUFC pic.twitter.com/xikDoh6s7N— DailyNUFC (@DailyNUFC_) March 17, 2025 He joined Newcastle United academy as their passionate supporter. However, the fairytale didn’t last for long for the tall kid, as he was released by the club at 11, so he tried his luck elsewhere with local teams like New Hartley, Blyth Town and Blyth Spartans.Unfortunately, in the meantime, Burn suffered a tragic accident in which he lost a ring finger on his right hand. Qué leyenda va a ser Dan Burn como acabe siendo el que le da el primer título al Newcastle desde 1955. pic.twitter.com/GOs8kXkA1b— Pablo Espinosa San Mauro (@pabloespinosa11) March 16, 2025 With his professional football career looking almost impossible then, Burn focused more on school and even had a part-time job at a local supermarket at 16. Thankfully for him and thousands of the Magpies’ fans, his love for football and determination played a crucial role in his staying on the right track. In 2009, Burn was promoted to the senior team of FC Darlington, the sixth tier of the English football hierarchy, due to the club’s financial problems and lack of available players. From that point on, everything started to go upward for Burn, who earned himself a contract with Fulham. After a few loans, he booked himself a place with the Cottagers, where he made appearances before moving to Wigan Athletic. After two years there, the place opened up for Burn at Brighton and Hove Albion, which proved to be the decisive step ahead of his fairytale-like return to St. James Park.##NAJAVA_MECA_8787928##Almost four full Premier League seasons with the Seagulls cemented Burn’s status as a reliable centre-back. And the penultimate step towards glory was finally there – on 31 January 2022, almost twenty years after being released by the club – Dan Burn triumphally joined Newcastle United upon signing a two-and-a-half-year deal. And then came Friday, and then came Sunday. March 2025 is the time of his greatest success, as all those years of hard and dedicated work have paid off.Big Dan Burn Our first goal at Wembley for 25 years couldn’t have been scored by anyone more fitting 🫶🫶 pic.twitter.com/s4PKoYFl92— Newcastle United (@NUFC) March 16, 2025
