In the 45th minute of the return leg between Manchester United and Lyon the score was 2-0 for the Red Devils. In the 77th minute, it was 2-2. In 109th minute it was 4-2 for Lyon and in the 119th minute the game finished 5-4 for United. This unbelievable roller-coaster was one of the most dramatic and exciting games we saw from Manchester since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013 and certainly the best match in the Europa League so far! After winning 2-0, the Red Devils managed to allow four goals, two of whom happened when Lyon had 10 men on the field, and yet they squeezed three goals in the last seven minute of overtime to win the game and qualify for the semi-finals. The season is over fore the Red Devils in the Premier League, but the European dream lives on!What a match. If this stunning game doesn’t lift their spirits up, nothing else will. Sitting at the 14th spot in the league, this was their chance to move on in Europe and eventually lift the trophy which could allow them to play in Europe in 2025/26 season and they held on to it, never gave up, even thou they trailed two goals seven minutes before the end, and the reward came. They started the match with only one striker (Rasmus Hojlund), as Joshua Zirkzee was ruled out for the rest of the season and teenager Chido Obi wasn’t signed up for the Europa League, but still managed five goals. Amorim decided to put back Onana between the sticks and it proved as a right decision as the Cameroonian keeper was excellent and made a couple of great saves. United being United, allowed themselves to concede two goals and allow Lyon to come back completely, and then to bring their fans to despair and allow two more goals in the overtime. By some sort of miracle (and completely lack of concentration from Lyon), they made a comeback in just seven minutes.Casemiro is the definition of clutch. 👏The Brazilian won the penalty in the 114th minute, assisted the equaliser in the 120th minute and assisted the winner in the 121st minute. He also won more duels (9) and created more chances (4) than any other Manchester United player,… pic.twitter.com/ywMoenUK6s— Squawka (@Squawka) April 17, 2025 United started aggressively and were rewarded after only ten minutes. The action started with Bruno Fernandes, who saw the upcoming Garnacho and passed the ball from the right. The Argentinian made a great back pass in space for Ugarte, who came up and only had to tap in for the lead. Manchester literally didn‘t allow Lion player to came out of the penalty area and created two more chances. Lyon goalkeeper Perri saved Casemiro‘s shot in the 16th minute, while Dalot‘s shot went over the bar. Finally Lyon started to attack but this time, Onana was ready. The Cameroonian stopped Akoukou’s header in the 22nd minute and then stopped Cherki‘s shot after a fantastic solo action in the 32nd minute. On the other side Fernandes nearly scored an Europa League goal of the season five minutes later, when he rocketed a volley off the frame of the goal. But the Red Devils finally scored the second goal in injury time when Dalot shrugged off he Lyon left-back and then picked out the far corner expertly with an exquisite finish.120 – Manchester United are the first team in history to score two goals in the 120th minute of a major European match. After a great dribbling, the Argentinian forward found himself one on one with Lyon goalkeeper Perri but just managed to shoot straight at him. And then Onana came to the fore again and saved another precise shot, this time from Tolisso. But United‘s keeper was helpless in the 71st minute when the home players failed to get the ball out of the penalty area after a free kick, and Lacazette used it and assisted to Tolisso for 2-1 and hope. Lyon ‘smelled‘ fear and continued to press, but Onana saved a powerful shot from Maitland-Niles. The Frenchmen made a complete comeback in the 77th minute, when Tagliagico took a shot from the left and it looked like Onana saved this one as well, but the ball went over the line for a shock at Old Trafford. Lyon continued to press but one weak tackle from Tolisso was worth a yellow card by the referee and the former Bayern Munich midfielder was expelled and the guests were left with 10 men. This was his second yellow so the VAR couldn’t be involved and it was really a questionable call. But United just didn’t know how to finish the game. When overtime started, they allowed 10-men Lyon to score two goals, one from a counter-attack (Cherki) and the second after a penalty kick (Lacazette). So how come they managed three goals in seven minutes. Well, Lyon players like concentration and experience. They just wanted to waste time and allowed themselves to concede the penalty, giving United much needed hope. The audacity and youthful passion of Kobbie Mainoo got them the equalizer and the pure luck from Harry Maguire gave them the victory. The question is – why don’t they play like this every week?UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE – QUARTER-FINALSSecond legThursdayAth.Bilbao – Rangers 2-0 (1-0)/Sancet 45+5, Williams 80/Eintr.Frankfurt – Tottenham 0-1 (0-1)/Solanke (p) 43/Lazio – Bodo 3-1 (1-0)/Castellanos 20, Noslin 90+3, Dia 99 – Helmersen 109/Man.Utd. – Olympique Lyon 5-4 (2-0)/Ugarte 10, Dalot 45+2, Fernandes 114(p), Mainoo 120, Maguire 121 – Tolisso 71, Tagliafico 77, Cherki 104,Lacazette (p) 109/
