No winners in the Derby of the Set Piece Experts

With a bit unrealistic (but deserved) double win over favorized Real Madrid in the Champions League, Arsenal suddenly turned their heads to the UEFA’s most popular competition, especially after it became clear that Liverpool will became next England champion. With the upcoming game with PSG already on Tuesday, the Gunners played their regular match with Crystal Palace which meant nothing to them, while it could have meant a possible fight for the Conference League place for the guests. With that attitude, Mikel Arteta’s men came out and scored two goals from their first two shots, but stopped from there and allowed the Eagles to sneak one point: Arsenal – Crystal Palace 2-2. (see all goals HERE) Most set-piece goals in the Premier League this season excluding penalties:◉ 16 – Arsenal ◎ 15 – Crystal Palace There was always going to be one this evening. 😅#ARSCRY pic.twitter.com/tS1d8pjzTq— Squawka Live (@Squawka_Live) April 23, 2025 This was a Battle of the Set Pieces Expert, as both clubs are leading the league in goals from set pieces, and while Arsenal added one more tonight to make it 23, Crystal Palace also added one of their own to make it 21. The Eagles managed another draw in a row (Bournemouth last week) but in reality should have won this game. They had better chances and even witnessed another Raya blunder, but never materialized them. The first goal was a good action from a set-piece while the second was a product of Saliba’s mistake. Arsenal never looked like pushing 100% for the win, as their mind is already on PSG.Shame on PGMOL for making Saliba assist Mateta for the goal 🤬 pic.twitter.com/hjLNnGZbVj— Yugdeep™️💫 (@Yugdeep_LFC) April 23, 2025 As the game started, Arsenal was already in the lead. Due to excellent set-piece setup created by , Kiwior was left all alone in the penatly area and his header ended up behind Henderson for 1-0. And that’s where Gunners stopped and allowed Palace to take the initiative. The guests scored an equalizer 25 minutes later from their own set-piece (this time it was a corner kick) where Eze took the ball from the edge of the penalty area and his shot bounced off the ground and into the top left corner for an equalizer. Former Gunner Eddie Nketiah should have scored minutes later when he took a shot from three meters, but luckily for Arsenal, Kiwior was there to put his leg just in time. Mikel Arteta’s men punished Palace for those misses when they scored the second goal from as many shots on target via Trossard, three minutes from time.Arsenal have now dropped 18 points from winning positions in the Premier League in 2024/25, more than in the two previous seasons combined (17). Only Everton (14) have drawn more PL games than the Gunners this campaign (13). 👀 pic.twitter.com/4eyzNSTYFu— Squawka (@Squawka) April 23, 2025 It was all Crystal Palace in the second half. Devenny missed a great opportunity in the 65th minute and Raya saved Guehi’s shot two minutes later. The Spanish keeper missed the ball entirely after the corner in the 68th minute, but luckily for him, the ball went to the other side without a single Crystal Palace player touching it. But, unlike in the most situations, where a team who misses chances ends up punished for it, Crystal Palace finally got their equalizer, seven minutes from time. Saliba made a mistake at the back and cunning Mateta stole the ball away from him and without hesitation took a shot while Raya was not on the goal line. Easy 2-2 and there was nothing Gunners could do even with an eight minute stoppage time.
