Former Vihiga United centre-back Ben Ngereso thought his tough days at Muhoroni Youth FC were over when promotion hopefuls Luanda Villa came calling during the mid-season transfer window.The lanky centre-half jumped at the opportunity, having endured a tough first leg at the Sugarbelt side. My new team was, however, luckily for me, patient with me and when everything cleared out, they allowed me enough time to regain my fitness’’ says Ngereso.Villa, placed eighth on the 20-team National Super league (NSL) log, sit only five points from the promotion playoff position and with ten matches still in the cards, know that it’s not over yet.The Leonard Swaleh coached sought to fix their leaky defence hence hunted down Ngereso from his Muhoroni side where he had only been for six months. He says it was an easy choice.‘’They told me about their project and where they would want the team to be in a few years, and I thought this would be a good fit. It is exciting,’’ says the lad who made his Villa debut against AP’s Bomet. “I have so far played two matches, and they went well. My target in the remaining ten matches is to keep the momentum, and even chase three or four goals as I am good at set-plays.”Ngereso stood tall for Saleh’s charges at the back against a high-flying AP’s manning a defence that kept a clean sheet as his side grabbed all three points with a 1-0 win.The following weekend, an away fixture to Nzoia Sugar at Sudi stadium, the same would be replicated. He now targets Naivas’ scalp as their fellow promotion chasers come calling at the Mumboha grounds this Saturday 26 April.Having regained his fitness and with two perfect starts, Ngereso is gunning for yet another splendid performance while keeping eyes and the team’s ascendancy.‘’It’s going to be a tough match. There is actually no easy match in the NSL and Naivas, by virtue of also wanting to earn promotion, will also want to make life difficult for us when we meet. However, we have prepared well,’’ he says, adding- the slim gap between the two sides will keep them inspired.‘’The league is not over yet, there is a little gap between us and position three so I can say we still have a chance of qualifying for the premier league.’’Coach Saleh’s men have won ten of their 27 matches so far in the campaign losing eight times and with a game in hand, a victory on Saturday will if them to as high as 6th in a tightly packed mid-table. Nairobi United lead the division with 56 points from the same number of matches.
