CWC: Olise and Kane too much for Boca

We’ve gotten used to watching plenty of exciting matches so far at the FIFA Club World Cup. We’re probably even surprised by the quality of football, considering that for some participants the season only recently ended. Still, not everything can be exciting and thrilling—sometimes it has to be dull. And that’s exactly how it was at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. In a not-so-attractive match—probably one of the least eventful since the tournament began—Bayern managed to crush the hopes of around 10,000 Boca Juniors fans with a goal by Olise, securing a place in the knockout stage with a 2–1 win.HARRY KANE’S GOAL!!!!!!! pic.twitter.com/IqKZA5StOO— Bayern & Football (@MunichFanpage) June 21, 2025 The giant from Buenos Aires tried to execute a “copy-paste” plan from their match against Benfica—looking to catch the Bavarians off guard through wing transitions and set pieces. It didn’t work. Bayern successfully neutralized Boca’s pace, cut off their wingers, and made their lone striker, Miguel Merentiel, invisible in the first half. Boca’s big problem was the lack of a Plan B, which only made Bayern’s job easier. The Germans took control of the pitch and took the lead through Harry Kane, a goal that turned out to be decisive.🚨 BOCA JUNIORS GOAL VS BAYERN pic.twitter.com/K3yCfkchPK— KinG £ (@xKGx__) June 21, 2025 Vincent Kompany’s team even had several great chances to increase their lead and knock Boca out early. Kingsley Coman missed from just three meters out, and shortly after, Michael Olise hesitated in a one-on-one situation with Agustin Marchesín when all he had to do was slot it in. At one point, the nominal hosts relaxed a bit, allowing Kevin Zenon a couple of decent efforts, but nothing more. The rest of the game was mostly fouls, stoppages, and talks with the referee.Michael Olise match winning goal from ALL ANGLES!Watch the @FIFACWC | June 14 – July 13 | Every Game | Free | https://t.co/i0K4eUtwwb | #FIFACWC #TakeItToTheWorld #BAYBOC pic.twitter.com/R2RzCsny68— DAZN Football (@DAZNFootball) June 21, 2025 Boca’s coaching staff had to make changes—they were clearly heading for defeat and needed to punish Bayern for those missed chances. It’s true that Boca has the weakest squad of all the South American teams in the tournament and is the least attractive to watch, but they’re tough as nails and managed to sting Bayern—right in the eye—in true South American fashion. They patiently waited for a counterattack, and one finally worked. Alan Velasco sent a pass into space for Merentiel, the Boca captain beat Taha to the ball, sent Josip Stanišić packing, and calmly slotted it past Manuel Neuer. Anyone at the stadium in that moment probably felt like they were at “La Bombonera,” with “Dale, Dale Boca!” echoing from all sides.Samba’s back — and Chelsea couldn’t keep up with Flamengo’s dance! The popular Genovese (a nickname for Boca) did everything possible to at least hold onto a point—and with it, a glimmer of hope for progressing to the knockout stage. Center-backs Ayrton Costa and Lautaro Di Lollo fought tooth and nail against all of Bayern, sliding, tackling, mowing down both opponents and teammates, and would’ve ripped up chunks of turf if they had to. But when it mattered most, they cracked. Kane somehow found Olise, the winger had enough time to set himself up and place the ball in the far corner. That was the moment that broke the hearts of Boca’s players and fans. There was no strength left, and the crucial point slipped away—likely along with Boca’s chances of reaching the next round.FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP 2025Matchday 2SaturdayLos Angeles – Esperance 0-1 (0-0)/Belaili 70/Bayern – Boca Juniors 2-1 (1-0)/Kane 18, Olise 84 – Merentiel 66/19:00: (9.00) Mamelodi (5.80) Dortmund (1.30)22:00: (1.20) Inter Milan (6.75) Urawa RD (14.0)Sunday00:55: (1.27) Fluminense (5.60) Ulsan (12.0)04:00: (2.15) River Plate (3.35) Monterrey (3.45)19:00: (1.22) Juventus (6.25) Wydad Casablanca (14.0)22:00: (1.22) Real Madrid (6.50) Pachuca (12.0)Monday00:55: (4.10) Salzburg (3.60) Al Hilal (1.88)04:00: (1.05) Man.City (14.0) Al Ain (35.0)***odds are subject to change***
