Bayern’s lead is melting like ice cream on a hot day

The day of the Bundesliga resumption brought us a realization that may seem quite obvious to some. The season is not over, and Bayern have not won another title yet. The Bavarians were shaken well during their 1-1 draw at third-placed RB Leipzig, who came close to upsetting the leaders. This way, Bayern have got a five-point lead at the top, with a match more than second-placed Freiburg. The injured Christopher Nkunku had to miss this pivotal game after having featured in all of the team’s previous 51 league outings. Timo Werner, who was also recovering from injury in recent weeks, was on the bench. That is why coach Marco Rose started Andre Silva upfront.Bayern gave a first start to goalkeeper Yann Sommer just a day after confirming his capture from Borussia Monchengladbach. The veteran goalie became the third-oldest player to make his Bayern debut, aged 34 years and 34 days. The first half-hour passed with very few chances on either side, but as soon as Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting got a half-decent chance – he made the most of it. The Cameroon international tucked away the ball past goalkeeper Janis Blaswich following a perfect left-wing cross from Serge Gnabry. The Red Bulls improved significantly after the break. They showed more urgency and determination to get some shots away. Dominik Szoboszlai sent a dangerous corner kick in, but Sommer did well to get off his line and claim it. However, the Swiss international couldn’t do much seven minutes into the second period, then the home side’s defender Marcel Halstenberg got his first goal of the season, reacting well to steer another Szoboszlai’s cross in with a fine diving header. Suddenly, the home crowd was back roaring again. The momentum had shifted completely in Leipzig’s favour. The crosses were flying in as Szoboszlai and Xaver Schlager tormented Josua Kimmich.Tensions threatened to boil over in the final minutes, as Rose got a yellow card after strong protests towards the officials. Werner came on for Leipzig, and Nagelsmann brought on veteran Thomas Muller and super talented Mathys Tel. The stage was set for some of the big-name forwards to make their mark on the game. However, we’ve only seen a couple of half-chances on either side as the teams shared the spoild. Freiburg will have a chance to reduce Bayern’s lead to just two points on Saturday.
