Everton, one of the traditional English football clubs, is on the verge of relegation from the top division since dropping down in 1951. For more than seven decades they’ve been mostly secure in the top flight and have taken their status as “unrelegateable” for granted. But it can all change soon, especially after their dismal 2-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham United.Irony hit Frank Lampard on so many levels on Saturday evening. He took his jaded Everton team to East London, the place where his football journey began in the 1990s. And he suffered a scarring defeat against the Hamemrs, his first club. Both teams desperately needed a long overdue win to give them a bit of respite in the relegation fight. Still, it’s former England and Chelsea star Lampard who’s left empty-handed after Jarred Bowen’s first-half double condemned the Toffees to the bottom, making Lampard’s record read just one win and 11 defeats in the past 14 games. Simply put, the club from Liverpool cannot afford to dismiss their manager and hire a new one. It will be a painful night in the West Ham boardroom.It now seems that all bad decisions, transfers, coaching appointments and PR suicides are now coming to haunt Everton and their troubled head coach.The visitors did try to mount an unlikely comeback at the London Stadium, but the chances were few. Alex Iwobi delivered an inviting-looking ball for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but the striker couldn’t reach it.David Moyes handed the new signing Danny Ings his West Ham debut, sending him on in the final 20 minutes in place of Michail Antonio, who had created Bowen’s second goal.Declan Rice had a glorious chance to ensure the points ten minutes from time, but his sliced finish rolled just wide of Jordan Pickford’s net. Regardless, the damage has been done from the visitors’ point of view.
