Nyamunyamu faults complacency, inexperience for Thika loss

Vihiga Queens had not tasted defeat in any competition since going down to River Angels of Nigeria in the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League matches held in Egypt in 2021.That, however, changed this weekend when the Boniface Nyamunyamu-coached side received a 4-1 thrashing in the Women Premier League (WPL) by rivals Thika Queens to dent an otherwise stellar run that saw them win the last season’s league title unbeaten.Thika Queens subject Vihiga Queens to first defeat of the seasonWhile there were tell-tale signs of struggle for the team’s striking force, none of the ardent followers of the game had envisioned Sunday’s result. If anything, it was going to be a close game since Thika had also recovered from their recent slump in form. However, Wendy Achieng and Chris Kach had other ideas, grabbing a brace each with the former scoring an own goal for Vihiga’s consolation goal. The goals take the former Harambee Starlets skipper, Achieng, top of the scorer’s table with six goals while Kach is at four.##NAJAVA_MECA_6978580##“There was a lot of complacency in the way we approached that match but more importantly, inexperience was also at play. I was missing two key players in Mercyline Oginga and Norah Ann. I had to tinker with our defense and that was what the opponent capitalized on for the goals. Thika caught us on the fast breaks because in an attempt to attack as a unit we left our backline exposed and they used their experience and speed to beat our defenders for the goals,” the tactician explained.Nyamunyamu further admitted that their finishing has been an area of concern this season and it was evident against Thika as their final third was wanting, despite creating chances.Wasteful Ulinzi bow to Wadadia in WPL“We will fight to finish the first leg on a high then boost our squad in the areas that we feel we need experienced players in. We have a good squad but most are young, players that we have nurtured and are performing at the levels we expect them to but a bit more experience will go a long way,” the tactician added. With the loss to Thika, Vihiga are still top of the table but their advantage has been cut to just two points from second-placed Nakuru Queens who, on the weekend, played for a one-all draw against Zetech Sparks.
