PSG on the razor’s edge: Mbappe misses two penalties, PSG denied two more goals

It was suppose to be an easy game, just the one PSG needed to boost their morale. Just like their next opponent in the Champions League, Bayern Munich, the Parisians didn’t start the year 2023 well. The recorded two defeats (Lens and Rennes) and one draw (Reims) and they need to get into form fast, so the game in Montpellier was just what the doctor ordered for Mbappe and co. The host is in terrible form and they are only two points above the relegation zone. On top of that, they have conceded stunning 41 goals so far (fourth worst in the league) so coach Galtier thought it’s time for Neymar to be rested and that Messi and Mbappe will be enough. They did at the end but only Mbappe finished the game: Montpelier – PSG 1-3.This was an interesting game, with two penalty saves, two disallowed goals, four scored and plenty of chances saved, but the league leaders cannot be satisfied with the display. They were superior, better, had more chances but somehow it didn’t look so fearsome as it should against such an opponent. Surely, even that is not so worrying as the fact that both Kylian Mbappe and Serhio Ramos were injured and had to leave the game. Before leaving the field in the 21st minute, PSG striker failed to score the penalty twice. The first one was awarded in the 8th minute, but fantastic Benjamin Lecomte saved it. However he moved from the line and the a retake was ordered. He saved it again, and Mbappe missed the empty goal when the ball bounced back to him.PSG looked a bit flat and two goals which they scored (Messi, Hakimi) were both denied by VAR due to offside, while all other chances were saved by Lecomte. Finally Ruiz used one defensive slip from the hosts and finally found the net in the 55th minute. After that, Lecomte continued to save the goal but when Messi finally scored the second goal, everything was finished. Montpellier had only three shots on target and one of them ended up to be a beautiful goal by Nordin, but youngster Zaire-Emery scored the third goal for the Parisians in injury time.LIGUE 1 – ROUND 21WednesdayToulouse – Troyes 4-1 (2-1)Lille – Clermont 0-0Reims – Lorient 4-2 (1-2)Nantes – Olympique Marseille 0-2 (0-0)Angers – Ajaccio 1-2 (1-0)Rennes – Strasbourg 3-0 (2-0)Olympique Lyon – Brest 0-0Monaco – Auxerre 3-2 (2-0)Montpellier – PSG (1.35)Lens – Nice 0-1 (0-0)
