Romelu Lukaku’s career seems to be a career of wrong decisions, at least when Chelsea is in question. The strong striker went to London for the first time as a kid from Anderlecht and wanted to emulate his idol Didier Drogba, but ended up his first tenure in the club after only 10 appearances in three years. He then again made a big mistake when he swapped Inter’s jersey and a Serie A title for the Blues under Thomas Tuchel. It’s like both men never saw the game film of each other, and didn’t realize that they are not good together. The German doesn’t play with a classic 9, but both made a mistake and soon, Lukaku was back in Inter. There are two reasons for that – Lukaku’s results and the financial situation. Inter still has a debt, which was the biggest reason why they pushed Lukaku a bit in 2021 to accept Chelsea’s offer. Bringing him back on a permanent deal would mean giving a large chunk of a future transfer kitty for the Belgian striker, not to mention sorting out the wage bill. And that is why Inter’s CEO Beppe Marotta was so reserved when asked about Lukaku.“Talking about that now is premature. He will return to Chelsea in June and then a new scenario will open up and we’ll see what to do then. The Belgian made no secret that he wants to stay in Milan, but he would need to play better in order to earn another comeback. He scored a crucial game winning goal against Porto in the Champions League, but it was his first goal from play since October 2022 (penalty goals are not included here), which is not good. So far, Lukaku has contributed just four goals and one assist in 15 competitive performances and has been injured numerous times.
