AFCON2023Q: African champions book their tickets for the next tournament

Some favorites are struggling (Nigeria), some are even losing (Cameroon), but a few African selections are doing what is expected of them – winning the games against lower opposition and Senegal is one of few. The current African champions started qualifications for AFCON 2023 with a win and have continued to do the same in order to continue with their perfect start. Today, they became another African nation to qualify for the tournament with a minimal win in Mozambique: The Mambas – The Lions of Teranga 0-1. 🚨 OFFICIEL : LE SÉNÉGAL SE QUALIFIE POUR LA CAN 2024 !! 🇸🇳🇸🇳 pic.twitter.com/rv67UbUaXH— 🏆 Actu Foot Afrique (@ActuFootAfrique) March 28, 2023 After thrashing Mozambique in Senegal on Friday 5-1, nobody expected that the same result would happen again, and the game was totally different. For starters, Aliou Cisse made a few changes in the team. Moussa Niakhate replaced Abdallah Ndour (injured), while in midfield, Ismaila Ciss got the nod at the expense of Nampalys Mendy. It started as expected, since the visitors scored first, after 18 minutes. It was a good action in which Sadio Made made a great assist to the galloping Boulaye Dia on the right side, and the Salernitana forward’s shot ended up in the net: 1-0.Il Senegal vince grazie al gol del nostro Boulaye Dia e si qualifica per la prossima edizione della Coppa d’Africa🇸🇳 pic.twitter.com/FRbiO5JYmq— Mariarosaria (@Mariarosariafeo) March 28, 2023 And that was basically it. Mozambique had a few half-chances but nothing serious. They didn’t even had a shot on target in the second half until the 85th minute, while Senegal didn’t bother much either. They knew their opponent, and they waited for them to go forward in order to work on their counter attack, but the Mambas were not up to it. Sadio Mane had one good chance in the second half which he created for himself, but his shot went just near the bar. Cisse’s goal is finished, the Lions of Teranga will be defending their title at the 2023 AFCON, while Mozambique will need to do much better against Rwanda and Benin.AFCON 20223 QUALIFIERSTuesdayBotswana – Equatorial Guinea 2-3 (1-2)/Elias 38, Seakanyeng 65 – Nsue 13, Ditsele 40 og, Balboa 51/Eswatini – Cape Verde 0-1 (0-0)/Mendes 65/Malawi – Egypt 0-4 (0-3)/Hamed 4, Marmoush 16, Salah 20, Zizo 49/Namibia – Cameroon 2-1 (0-0)/Shalulile 55, Limbondi 79 – Aboubakar 90+1/Gambia – Mali 1-0 (0-0)/Colley 79/Liberia – South Africa 1-2 (1-1)/Jebor 35 – Lepasa 19, Mayambela 53/Mozambique – Senegal 0-1 (0-1)/Dia 18/20:00 Tanzania – Uganda22:00 Comoros – Ivory Coast22:00 Togo – Burkina Faso23:00 Libya – TunisiaWednesday00:55 Mauritania – DR Congo***odds are subject to change
