Former NSL MVP glad to be back

Portipher Odhiambo came to Kakamega Homeboyz high-flying at the time, to a high-flying club. Having just been named the 2020/21 National Super League’s (NSL) most valuable player, a tough feat for a centre-back, Homeboyz quickly snapped him up from Vihiga Bullets. Homeboyz were themselves riding high at the top of the FKF PL table standings under coach Bernard Mwalala. Gor Mahia look to extend FKFPL lead as KCB keep chaseThings, however, began to tumble for the lanky centre-half with a knee injury coming right on the eve of his expected debut for the Kakamega-based side. He would have to sit out a huge chunk of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign. This, he says hit him hard.”Everyone was waiting for my debut for the team because I had come into the team with a relatively huge name. The fans and even the technical bench wanted to see what I could offer. The knee injury derailed my entry into the starting eleven,” he says.Towards the closing stages of last season however, he would recover and earn his long awaited debut for the side. Homeboyz, expected to win last season’s campaign, had at this time rested on their laurels and Tusker had caught up. The league title was gone.##NAJAVA_MECA_7138730##”It would have been nice to win the title in my first season but whatever happened happened. We tried as a team but it was beyond us at that point,’’ says the former Vihiga Bullets man.Odhiambo, who has featured for such teams as Nakuru All Stars in the second tier, has this season found his way into Homeboyz starting eleven. Despite not putting on a show as last season, he stays hopeful that the current squad- given time- can pick up a trophy.”I am glad to be playing again even though the season hasn’t been kind to us as a team. It will be well because I know we have a great technical bench and a great team too. We just call for patience,’’ he continues. Match Day: Kakamega Homeboyz FC vs Kenya Commercial Bank FC 2PM, Bukhungu.
